What to Know Before Your Appointment

Prepare for Your First Visit

We Want You to Feel Ready

Your First Visit to Oral Surgery Group

At Detroit Oral Surgery, we understand that visiting an oral surgeon for the first time can feel unfamiliar. That is why we have put together this guide to help you know exactly what to expect, what to bring, and how to prepare — so your visit is as smooth and stress-free as possible.

What to Bring

  • A valid photo ID (driver's license, state ID, or passport)
  • Your dental and medical insurance cards
  • A list of all current medications, including dosages and supplements
  • Any recent X-rays, CT scans, or referral documents from your dentist
  • Completed patient forms (or arrive 15 minutes early to fill them out)

Medical History

Please be prepared to share your full medical history, including past surgeries, current health conditions, allergies, and any medications you are taking — even those that may seem unrelated to oral surgery. This information helps our surgeons plan the safest, most effective treatment for you.

Eating and Drinking Before Your Visit

For a standard consultation, there are no dietary restrictions. However, if sedation or general anesthesia is planned for your appointment, you will receive specific fasting instructions in advance. Typically, patients are asked not to eat or drink anything for at least 8 hours before sedation. If you are unsure whether your visit will involve sedation, please call our office at (313) 562-1515 to confirm.

Medications

Continue taking your regular medications unless our office instructs you otherwise. If you take blood thinners, diabetes medications, or any other prescriptions that may affect your procedure, please let us know when scheduling so we can provide specific guidance.

What to Wear

We recommend wearing comfortable, loose-fitting clothing with short sleeves. If IV sedation is planned, short sleeves or easily rolled-up sleeves are especially helpful. Avoid wearing jewelry, heavy makeup, or nail polish on the day of a surgical procedure.

Arrange a Ride

If your appointment includes IV sedation or general anesthesia, you will need a responsible adult to drive you to and from the office. The effects of sedation can last several hours after your procedure, so please plan accordingly. Your driver should remain in the office or nearby during your appointment.

What to Expect During Your Visit

Your first visit typically includes a comprehensive oral examination, a review of any imaging (including 3D CT scans taken in our office if needed), and a detailed discussion of your diagnosis and treatment options. Our surgeons take the time to answer every question and make sure you feel confident in your care plan before moving forward. Most consultations last 30 to 60 minutes.

After Your Consultation

Before you leave, our team will review your treatment plan, discuss financial options and insurance coverage, and help you schedule any follow-up appointments. If a procedure is recommended, you will receive detailed pre-operative instructions tailored to your specific treatment.
